Language Arts
Council Bluffs Community School District offers a balanced and comprehensive English/Language Arts (ELA) program. Through an integrated model of literacy, our students will develop essential skills as readers, writers, speakers, viewers, and critical thinkers.
Grounded in the Iowa Academic Standards, thematic units are designed around big ideas and essential questions - providing a context for our students to explore, learn about, and evaluate our world. Students will experience a balanced reading diet of informational and literary texts. They will write their own narrative, explanatory, and opinion/argumentative pieces. As a result of this learning, students will develop into critical thinkers who use evidence to support their thinking and seek to understand multiple perspectives and cultures.
As Council Bluffs Community School District students progress through the grades, they will continue to develop their skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking as they work with increasingly complex texts and ideas. We will build on the structures established in earlier grades, using inquiry, collaboration, the writing process, media and technology, and interdisciplinary work to ensure our students are college and career ready.
