Kanesville Advisory Program

  • Kanesville has two separate Advisory Programs. At Kanesville we believe there are two distinct groups of students who require a differentiated focus. The first group are those students who have 40 or more credits. These students have reached “senior status” and have very specific needs regarding their senior year and post high school plans. The second group of students are those students with less than 40 credits. These students need to focus on building a healthy and strong relationship with a mentor in the building, staying abreast of their workload, developing social and study skills, and, lastly, developing their organizational and goals setting skill set. By having two different advisory programs, advisors will be able to focus on the needs of their students, and they will be able to avoid having to present and work on items that are not pertinent to one group or the other. In turn, this allows students more time working directly with their advisor on activities that mean the most to them.

    Senior Advisory

Once students reach 40 credits, they will be assigned to an advisor who will focus on the needs of the “senior student.” Students will meet Tuesday-Friday with their advisor and will receive a letter grade along with .25 credit(s) each Hex/Session, or 6 weeks. Their previous advisory teacher will forward the electronic copy of their graduation checklist to the assigned senior advisor. Teachers will maintain the graduation checklist in a Google Folder titled “Teacher’s Name Advisory” that will be shared with the administrator. Transitions to the senior advisory will occur at the conclusion of each Semester or Hex/Session.

Seniors will focus on maintaining momentum toward graduation by participating in grade checks and goal setting. Students will have opportunities to fill out important paperwork such as FAFSA, scholarships, or applications that will impact their post secondary interests. Students who are pursuing work or other employment opportunities upon completion of high school will get assistance with creating job resumes, preparing cover letters, and help preparing themselves for the demands and skill sets employers are seeking. Speakers and outside of school events will be scheduled to expose these students to college, careers, and speakers who cater to students nearing graduation.

Senior Advisors will work closely with the Kanesville counselor to stay abreast of important events, deadlines, and opportunities presented for these upperclassmen. One advisor will focus on the specific requirements or activities that are unique to Abraham Lincoln High School while the other advisor will focus on those same things related to Thomas Jefferson High School. The Kanesville graduation coach will also participate in delivering and preparing presentations, tasks, and support for these Seniors as needed throughout the year.

Senior Advisory Recognition will be developed through a “Senior Advisory Bulletin” and personalized news feed on the Kanesville website. As students are added to the Senior Advisory their picture and future plans will be displayed. Each student added to the Senior Advisory will also be interviewed and featured on the Kanesville News section on our building website.

    General Advisory

Any student who has less than 40 credits will be assigned to and will remain with an advisor until they reach 40 credits and transition to the Senior Advisory. Students will meet Tuesday-Friday with their advisor and will receive a letter grade along with .25 credit(s) each Hex/Session, or 6 weeks. Their advisor will maintain an accurate electronic graduation checklist that can be shared with the student. Teachers will maintain the graduation checklist in a Google Folder titled “Teachers Name Advisory” that will be shared with the administrator.

Students will focus on different aspects of their high school career directly related to study skills, organization, social/emotional health, building community in their school, and exploring personal interests. Students will have different focuses for different days of the week.

    ●  Tuesday: Students will be doing grade checks, checking for missing work, developing a plan to catchup on missing or late assignments, failed assessments, or personal issues that are interfering with their classwork.

    ●  Wednesday: Students will participate in Project Kanesville. Project Kanesville will focus on building community, improving our facility, helping the community, and or preparing for student led events that are nearing. Some examples of projects students may work on are updating and creating new bulletins or organizing the upcoming blood drive to name a few.

    ●  Thursday and Friday: Students will participate in different activities that will help them to develop personal skills that will assist them during their high school career. Advisors will access lesson plans through the Kanesville Advisory Website. Teachers will assess the needs of the students each hex/session and co-develop the lessons for the next hex. Teachers will collect assignments or artifacts for each lesson to use for assessing the students grade. The topics we will focus on each hex are:

    ○ Organizational skills

    ○ Working with others

    ○ Ethical appropriate use of technology

    ○ Coping Skills/Stress Management

    ○ Risk Taking Behavior/Personal Responsibility

General Advisors will work closely with the Kanesville counselor to stay abreast of important events, deadlines, and opportunities presented for underclassmen. The Kanesville graduation coach will also participate in delivering and preparing presentations, tasks, and support for these students as needed throughout the year. Advisors will meet once a hex/session with the principal to discuss the needs of our students and to develop lesson plans and activities pertinent to our current students.

General Advisory Recognition will be developed through a “Project Kanesville” bulletin board that will feature events, pictures of completed projects, and news related to the partnership of our students and their community. Each hex the advisor will work with the students to create news stories to feature on the Kanesville webpage along with events we want to invite our students, community, and school family to attend.
