District Employees Take Part in Relay for Life

This past weekend more than 30 Council Bluffs Community School District Employees took part in the annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life for Pottawattamie County. District employee Jeff Boe from Kirn was the chairperson and pulled off a spectacular event. The day was a great success as we had numerous district employees as committee chairs and many others walking in the event. Deb Stephenson from Kirn Middle was the Entertainment Chairperson assisted by her daughter Lyndsay Stephenson from Pusey and provided, music, performers, exercise groups all day long. Jeanne Burns from Kirn was the Survivorship Chairperson having survived 3 years now cancer free. She was assisted by colleagues from Kirn, Fran Shorey, and Val Carolan along with Gunn teachers Ruth Rysta and retired teacher Jean Pashby. The Team of Hope that included all these people had the most years of surviving cancer with a total of 64 years. This was the highest rate of survivorship for all the teams that participated in the Relay. AL had a team that included many members of their staff and they stayed all day long and to the very end when the rain finally washed us out. Circle of Friends also had a team of Council Bluffs teachers and paras who had previously worked together but are now scattered around the district participated as well. These include Carol Maddox a Tag Strategist, Susan Jensen a para at Hoover, Mary Ann Hilz a former para with the District, Diane Westervelt from Hoover, Mary Newman at Thomas Jefferson. and Deb Hernandez formerly at Hoover and now moving to Kirn. All these individuals gave their time, and effort to support family, friends, colleagues who have somehow been touched by cancer.

Franklin Staff Walk Across Iowa

The Franklin Staff has collectively walked 300 miles across Iowa this month! They tracked their weekly progress on an Iowa map posted in the Teachers' Lounge. Ms. Swanson is rewarding the group with two days to wear jeans, one for going the distance and the other for completing it before the end of the quarter. The staff appreciates her support.  Congratulations Franklin Staff!
