Education is an adventure in human relationships.

— Gerald W. Kirn, "Where There is No Vision," Address to the Iowa State Teacher's Association, 1941

Gerald W. Kirn Middle School, located in Council Bluffs, Iowa, is a public middle school in the Council Bluffs Community School District. Kirn is an academic institution that offers a variety of educational and recreational opportunities for students in grades six through eight. Courses include computer applications, Spanish, vocal music, band, orchestra and fine arts classes. Kirn offers a range of extra-curricular activities and athletics. Kirn students proceed to Abraham Lincoln High School.

REMINDER: Students are reminded that they need to cross Kanesville either at the overpass or at the crosswalk – NOT in the middle of the block. We’ve had numerous reports of students almost being hit by cars as they cross mid-block on their way to Kirn – these reports included those walking, on bikes and on scooters. The SRO will ticket students for jaywalking if they are caught crossing in the middle of the block.

Phone Messages:

Getting messages to students at the end of the day is a challenge — student aides are not available to run messages and teachers are trying to teach their Advisory classes and are not always available to answer their phones. Although we will do our best to try to reach your student with any message you may need to get to him/her — we cannot guarantee that any message called in to the school after 2:30 p.m. will reach your student.

Food Deliveries for Students:

The office will no longer accept food deliveries for students or drop offs from parents. It has become a significant distraction to the educational environment.

We would invite parents to join their child for lunch if they would like to. If a parent would like to join their student for lunch, they can call the office the day before to make an appointment that matches up with the student’s lunch time. The parent and student can have lunch at the tables outside of the counseling office.
