Recently Roosevelt 5th grade TAG students studied oceanography and climate change.  We partnered with Caesar’s properties and participated in the first National Park Trust Buddy Bison Carbon Reduction Contest. Roosevelt was the only school in Iowa participating in this contest and we competed with other elementary schools across the United States, including schools in Atlantic City, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and North Kansas City.  The purpose of the contest was to empower students to reduce their carbon footprint and GO GREEN through weekly and fun action items.  Some of the things the 5th graders did to earn carbon reduction points was turning off lights, powering down computers, recycling old cell phones and ink cartridges, reducing paper usage, investigating waste in landfills, using reusable water bottles, using power strips to cut down on “energy vampires”, and the students made digital presentations to encourage our business partners to cut down on energy usage. Points for the contest were awarded to the schools for the action items they completed to reduce their carbon footprint.  The total points we earned was added together with Caesar’s properties to create a grand total for our region.  Roosevelt took third place in the contest and received a check for $550 that will be used for a visit to a park towards the end of the year.  Congratulations Roosevelt TAG students for all your hard work!
