School Attendance Area Boundary changes

Franklin Elementary School will get a boost in student enrollment next school year when Walnut Grove Elementary School is closed. The Council Bluffs Board of Education approved the new school attendance areas to assign the current Walnut Grove students to four schools, including Carter Lake, Edison, Franklin and Roosevelt elementary schools. As a result of the attendance area boundary shifts, about 133 Walnut Grove students will be assigned next year to attend Franklin. Also as a result of the school attendance area boundary shift, approximately 40 of our current Franklin students have been assigned to attend Roosevelt Elementary next year.

The school boundaries were drawn carefully to balance the numbers of students at each building, based on the number of classrooms available. Next year, enrollment at Franklin is estimated to be approximately 460 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, well within the number of students our building is designed to serve.

Each Walnut Grove family is being notified of their new school for next year so they can begin getting to know the new school’s principal, teachers, support staff, students and parents. We will be planning several opportunities for our new students to visit our school this school year to participate in activities to become familiar with the school and our great students, staff and parents.

New Way to Pay for School Meals

myschoolbucks logo circleWe are introducing a new way to pay for school meals with My School Bucks! The first step parents need to take is to register your child for a free account. You can then access your account balance, set up automatic payments, schedule email reminders, and download the free app for use with your smartphone! Parents can still access the “old” system to check your account balance and pay for meals.  However, we would like to encourage parents to start using My School Bucks to become familiar with the new system. Open this story and click on the image or this link to be connected.

Franklin’s Walking Club is taking off!

Franklin Elementary’s walking club started in October.  So far we have 10 students who have reached the 3.1 mile level, and one who has walked 6.2.  Students earn different colored wristbands for each milestone.  It is not too late to join.  The club is for students in 3rd through 5th grade.  Walking is done during recess.  Occasionally the club will take walks off school grounds, so we need parent permission.

Click here for more information and parent permission form.
