Council Bluffs finish in top 20 in competition for All-America City Award

A group of nearly 30 adults and children, including Mayor Matt Walsh and Council Bluffs Community School District superintendent Martha Bruckner, represented the City of Council Bluffs at the All-America City Conference in Denver, June 17-19. At the conference, Council Bluffs accepted recognition as one of the 20 finalists but was not selected as one of the 10 communities named an All-America City.

To be selected as a finalist, the community submitted an application to demonstrate the local efforts related to this theme. The Council Bluffs application focused on three main areas:
• expanding free outdoor, wireless Internet across the community (BLink) www.blinkwifi.org
• capital campaigns that raised money for three facilities benefitting children in Council Bluffs (YMCA, Children’s Square USA and Council Bluffs Community School District’s newly named Gale Wickersham Athletic Complex)
• continued progress on the Grade Level Reading Campaign, improving early literacy, school attendance, and summer learning.

Among the representatives from Council Bluffs are nine students, educators and leaders from the City of Council Bluffs, Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce, Council Bluffs Community School District, Iowa West Foundation, Google, Children’s Square U.S.A., and the Council Bluffs Convention & Visitors Bureau.

This is the second appearance in four years for Council Bluffs as a finalist to become an All-America City. The award program is sponsored by the National Civic League, and celebrates innovative community-driven solutions.

Council Bluffs Teacher Recognized with The Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award

maskerMrs. Debora Masker of Kirn Middle School was awarded the junior Division Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award for Iowa. As a winner of this award Masker is nominated for the National Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest in June 2016. The National Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award is awarded to one junior division (grades 6-8) and one senior division (grades 9-12) teacher who has shown outstanding creativity, commitment, and inspiration in developing student interest in history education.
Each of the 56 affiliates of National History Day® awards one teacher in each division $500 and nominates him or her for the National Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award. Masker is the junior division winner from Iowa and is now nominated for the national award.
The winners of the national award receive $10,000 in honor of their outstanding efforts to encourage and support history education. The affiliate and national awards are sponsored by Patricia Behring in recognition of the pivotal role teachers play in the lives of students and to encourage creative and inspiring instruction in classrooms around the world. The two national winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on June 16, 2016.
“National History Day firmly believes that quality teachers are the best educational resources students have,” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “The teachers selected as Behring Award recipients are a credit to their discipline, and exemplify what it takes to be a quality educator.”
Teachers can be nominated by their administrators, peers, or themselves.
To qualify for the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award, teachers must participate in the National History Day Contest and demonstrate excellence in the classroom. Winners are chosen by a team of teachers, administrators, and historians. Their work must clearly illustrate the development and use of creative teaching methods that interest students in history and help them make exciting discoveries about the past.
