Board of Education Approves Elementary School Boundaries for 2011-12
On Tuesday, February 23rd, the Board of Education approved a proposal to change the current elementary school boundaries for the 2011-12 school year. The goal in creating new boundaries is to help ensure all students in the Council Bluffs Community School District are educated in modern school facilities that are efficient and offer well-rounded opportunities for all students. The changes will mean some students who now live in the Hoover, Gunn, Bloomer and Washington attendance areas would be assigned to attend different schools in the fall of 2011.
Prompting the discussion and new boundary proposal was the decision to open a new elementary school at the intersection of Valley View Drive and College Road in the eastern part of the school district in August of 2011. Students now attending Gunn, Hoover and Bloomer live in the part of the district closest to the new school.
At a future meeting, the Board will be considering official action to close two elementary schools -- Gunn and Washington -- at the end of next school year (May of 2011). Parent meetings are being scheduled to discuss the proposal and answer questions. Under the proposal, Gunn students would be assigned to attend the newly-renovated Hoover, the new school on College Road, Lewis & Clark or Crescent, depending on where they live. Washington students would be assigned to attend Bloomer, Lewis & Clark or Hoover.
Parent requests to have their child(ren) attend a school other than the one assigned will be granted as long as space allows to maintain reasonable class sizes. Parents who request transfers to other schools will be responsible for transportation.
