Course Description:
Literacy begins with the ability to read fluently, critically, and with understanding and enjoyment. Literacy also includes the ability to locate, evaluate, use and communicate information effectively. Such "information literacy" is critical in our increasingly information-driven world. Instruction in information literacy with both traditional print and electronic tools integrated with classroom content can help meet the information needs of diverse students. Research ("Make the Connection," listed elsewhere in this syllabus) has documented the need for information resources available to students and teachers 24/7. This course will assist participants in improving the integration of online research and reference tools (provided by Iowa's AEAs) with curriculum standards and benchmarks. Class members will incorporate learning activities that utilize online databases. Participants will review lesson plans/activities that support best practices in the instructional design process, to support content standards, Information Literacy Standards, National Educational Technology Standards, and the Iowa Teaching Standards. After choosing one of these lesson plans, participants will be asked to write a one-page paper indicating how they would direct/assist students in utilizing Iowa AEA Online resources with the assignments presented in the chosen lesson. While there are no prerequisites for this class, a basic knowledge of email, word processing, and web search skills is helpful.
