Thomas Jefferson IT Club Competes in IT - Olympics

Thomas Jefferson IT Club students participated during the school year in an innovative program sponsored by Iowa State University. The IT club worked on game design and robotics and competed in the IT-Olympics April 23rd and 24th in Ames, Iowa at the Hilton Coliseum.  The event included nearly 400 high school students from Iowa on 77 teams across three venues: cyber defense, robotics and game design.  The Thomas Jefferson team competed in the game design venue that entailed designing an educational game using the Sciences, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) concept.  For the Robotics venue, the team designed and programmed a Lego Mindstorms NXT robot that competed in a sumo competition where two autonomous robots try to push or flip the other outside of a circular ring.  In addition to Game Design and Robotics, the team was required to perform a community service project.  The students went to the Council Bluffs Boys and Girls Club for two evenings and taught young students PowerPoint animation concepts.
